It’s hot tonight. Unseasonably hot. Your grandma used to tell you a cup of scalding tea would cool you down, and in that same spirit I offer Kimmy.
Over at Flickr, one of the folks commenting on this image felt the photographer should have cropped this pic below the elbow. I disagree. There’s a line here, a gentle S-curve which takes in Kimmy’s head, her slender torso, her lower back in shadow. This is art to my untrained eye. Crop it below the elbow, and you have an artistic nude, but not . . . art. Yeah, I can’t express myself worth beans tonight. But here’s the cropped version, so you can decide for yourselves:

D.
PS: here’s Dean’s Friday Flickr babe. How come no one else is playing?
Hmm. The cropped version seems more balanced to me, though I’d have cropped it a bit lower than that–about halfway between the elbow and the bottom of the original. Which would destroy that S-curve you like, but it disappears into shadow, an effect that’s not echoed anywhere else on the picture.
Eh. I don’t think there’s ever any one right answer when it comes to art–the S-curve works for you, so that’s the one that’s right for you.
Sometimes things work better if you break the rules a bit, and I agree with you, I like the first version better. The second one is better as a portrait, but the first one is more sensual.
You need the butt.
Much better uncropped. There’s more expression in the photo. Or butt. or both.
It’s true. I do need the butt.
I’d crop right at the edge of her hair’s end. Her hand is bent unnaturally, and, unless you look closely and see her arm in the shadow, it looks almost as if someone else’s hand were grabbing her or the hand was just floating in space. (Thing, anyone?)
Plus, the expression on her face is one of being bored out of her mind. But, if you crop that out, you’re left with a strip of hair and shoulder.
Then again, the hair is kind of listless. And the shoulder alone isn’t all that interesting, so we’re down to a black box, which could have been accomplished without the model, photographer or camera.
Now, take that black square, mix it up with some white squares, perhaps rotate some of them and maybe we can make some art deco art!
I like the uncropped version. And I like Kimmy.
Can I play? I’ll post one on Sunday.
Forgot to add … Kimmy has a Drew Barrymore thing that really works for me.
Dan, you are welcome to post YOUR vision of beauty. Not that this woman approaches my ideal, but I do think she’s soft on the eyes.
John, I was thinking Christina Ricci. Welcome to the blog!
