I spent the day immersed in scenery like this.
We’re looking out across the Smith River Valley at the Siskiyou Mountains in the distance. Looking down from our trail, we can see the South Fork of the Smith River:
This looks out of focus to me, confirming I am Teh Suxx0r at photography. Must. Take. Class. (On the other hand, some photos can be blurry as hell and they still rawk.) Trust me, the Smith is so clear, you can count the stones.
Two miles hike in, two miles out, with nothing to do at our destination but soak our tootsies in one of the nation’s few unspoiled rivers . . .
Here we are at Buck Creek Camp. Not to be confused with Butt Crack Camp, which was horribly crowded today — something about an outing organized for Republican congressmen.
Jake and I learned to recognize poison oak (by AVOIDING it, okay? But I guess we won’t know for sure until tomorrow), sorrel, and huckleberries. We went hiking with a patient of mine and his wife, both of whom could lap us several times over. They kindly slowed their pace for us.
Here’s a closeup of that last photo, showing Jake giving a coy look:
Jake asked, “What’s coy?” so I said, “A really big goldfish.”
And he said, “Oh. . . . What?”
It must be a pain in the ass being my kid.
So when you’re soaking your tired feet in icy water, lying on hot river stones, and looking up, what do you see?
Aaaah.
We’re going to be sore tomorrow, though.
D.
The clear blue skies look so pretty!
For outdoor scenic photography, a polarized filter really helps. However, you have a point’n’shoot (a pretty good one: those Nikons are high quality) and I’m not sure what is available for those, filter-wise. A polarizer will deepen the sky, saturate colours, and reduce the glare on smooth surfaces like rocks and the surface of the water.
What are you talking about? These pictures are great!
So…WERE you sore the next day?
Dan: when I left Southern Cal to go to Berkeley, that was the first thing I noticed. The skies were BLUE, not gray! And they were nearly all the time, not just when a wind scoured all the smog from the sky!
Thanks, Dean. I’ll see what it says online about filters for this camera.
Sis, I’m not sore, but it’ll be interesting to see how Jake feels. Also: no poison oak! Just a mosquito bite on top of my head.
Gorgeous scenery! LOL about Butt Crack Camp.
Gorgeous pictures. “Butt Crack Camp”– what are you visiting my house?

Why, CD, are y’all a bunch of plumbers?
Funny how it let you in as Anonymous, but balked at CornDog. Maybe it thinks you want to sell me carbohydrate- and fat-rich snack foods.
