Jerry, We Hardly New Ye

Jerry Falwell, 1933-2007, dead at age 73

Jerry on homosexuality

“AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”

“Homosexuality is Satan’s diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.”

“[homosexuals are] brute beasts…part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.”

Jerry on the separation of Church and State

“The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country”

Jerry on feminism

“It appears that America’s anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men’s movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening”

I listen to feminists and all these radical gals – most of them are failures. They’ve blown it. Some of them have been married, but they married some Casper Milquetoast who asked permission to go to the bathroom. These women just need a man in the house. That’s all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they’re mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They’re sexist. They hate men – that’s their problem.

Jerry on religious tolerance

“If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being”

Jerry on 9/11

“…throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad…I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America…I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen.”

I take it back — we knew ye only too well. Don’t let the Gates of Hell hit you on the ass.

  2. Suisan says:

I Sooo want to be fly on the wall when Jerry starts telling God that he Did His Work and Spread His Message to the clueless souls down on Earth.

  3. Walnut says:

Gehenna, Shaina. Gehenna. And I know of no Jewish commandment forbidding schadenfreude, but then, I’m not a Talmudic scholar 🙂

Suisan: You really think Jerry’s gonna get that kind of an audience? I see some 37th level flunky taking the case. Yeah. Uh-huh. Tell it to the hand. Byeeee. (Pulls lever, trap door opens.)

  4. noxcat says:

I had never read that quote of his about feminism. I consider myself a feminist, and I LOVE men…(grins lasciviously)

  5. Walnut says:

Yeah, I really don’t get it. I see no inconsistency between being a feminist (or a lesbian, or a lesbian feminist) and loving men. He was merely fostering a stereotype dearly held by the religious right, IMO. Those folks have a problem with complexity, ambiguity, reality.

  6. Corn Dog says:

Dang. Some of that stuff sounds straight off of Saturday Night live. I was laughing pretty hard when I was reading it. Then I realized he was serious.

  7. Da Nator says:

I can’t wait ’til he’s buried, so I can dance on his grave!

  8. Lyvvie says:

I’m with Suisan – certainly he’ll have a bit of time in the waiting room – we can learn astral projection by then right?

  9. Walnut says:

    CD: all too serious.

    Thorne: now, that’s funny!

DN: Better watch out. Ever see the end of Carrie?

Lyvvie: you’re assuming the decision will be a difficult one. I dunno . . .
