What I learned on my Las Vegas vacation

A few surprising things, and a few kinda interesting items:

  1. Jake is a pretty good chess player. My brother (who is somewhere around Expert level) slaughtered him no worse than he usually slaughters me.
  2. Make your opponent tie down his pieces to the defense of pawns. (My bro did some teaching, too.)
  3. George Bush is in big trouble. My brother, a revivalist Christian from the heart of Orange County, no longer supports him. That tells me Bush’s base is seriously in deep shit.
  4. Jake and I learned to play Texas Hold ‘Em.
  5. We went to an Irish pub last night. I love black pudding.
  6. AOL sucks every bit as much as people say it does.
  7. There are indeed some fine restaurants in Vegas. Saturday night, we went to Ferraro’s, an upscale Italian restaurant. My mom and dad cleaned their plates (Jake and I were making jokes about them leaving tongue marks). Afterwards, my mom insisted, “I don’t like Italian food.”
  8. My son and I get along much better when we’re on vacation. I suspect work makes me grouchy. Go figure.

We’re flying home today. McCarren International Airport recommends we show up two hours prior to our flight. I hate to travel, but I do love coming home.

  1. Hi Doug,
Sounds like Vegas was fun. I have only been there once but I did have a good time. I was there with my high school leadership class for a workshop at UNLV. Two kids we had to send home when they were picked up by the cops for spitting on cars….leadership students, huh…we had fun going to all of the roller coasters. I know you are just getting home but I needed to order some fruit flies if you have an extra culture available.
    Thanks,
    Rae

Wow to #3…the last time I talked to him, this was not the case, so it’s been a while.
Our mother may have crabbed about not liking Italian food, but she raved about it to me on the phone that same night. I think you scored dozens of brownie points on this visit.

Expensive brownie points, Sis 😉 It was Spring Break, so car rental costs were double. Youch.

Rae, we should be able to do that, no prob.
