Firing range targets, 2012

Some observations:

1. My keen medical eye suggests a curious observation: zombies one through four all have torticollis.

2. Not shown: two other Middle Eastern (and, significantly, non-zombie) targets. Racism against Arabs is okay.

3. Not shown: several non-zombie criminal perpetrators — who are all white. Racism against blacks in NOT okay.

4. You can blast the hell out of Santa, however, as long as he is a zombie.

An interesting window into another sub-culture. The more interesting question is what you were doing at a shop that sells such things (or is it Wal-mart?).

My parents aren’t getting any younger, so one of the things they keep asking is whether I want anything from their house. The only things I cared about were my dad’s homemade hunting knife and a mercy pistol he “liberated” from a dead Nazi medic in WWII. To get the pistol from Las Vegas to CA, however, I had to do something called an FFL transfer from one gun store to another. It’s legaller that way 🙂 Hence my visit yesterday to our local gun store, to do the paperwork to get my dad’s weapon. I had to take a 30-question quiz — lots of “True or False: it’s a good idea to pick your nose with the muzzle of a loaded revolver” questions. I missed two — the age at which it’s permissible in California to buy a gun — 21, I said 18 — and how long a person is forbidden from purchasing a weapon after committing a felony. I said five years, the answer was LIFE. So I guess the NRA has not gone after THAT demographic, yet. Can you imagine? “These folks have paid their debt to society. Why are we denying them their Second Amendment rights?”

Now I have to wait 10 days, the statutorily mandated waiting period. Although as my dad says, “The only way you could kill someone with that thing would be to shove it in their ear.” Which I guess was the most likely mode of use, back in the day.

Ha! That story was better than the zombie targets. Loved the quote from your dad. Although, yeah, I hadn’t ever considered cartoonish gun target lovers as a niche market before. But, lo and behold, the internet holds everything: http://zombieindustries.com/?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=zombies

  4. Oh, targets of non-white criminals are also okay. They pretty studiously avoid racial stereotypes, though (unlike the Arab terrorist ones).

Well… I should qualify that – the ‘legitimate’ target makers avoid racial stereotyping. There are plenty of racist targets to be had at many gun shows.

Da: thanks for the link 🙂

ps: oh, GUN SHOWS. I think I need to do at least one gun show in my life, just for the experience.

  6. It’s… different. Being in Missouri skewed things towards the white-sheet demographic, for sure. I’ve only been to one here in WA since we moved, and the local org that runs them has a zero-tolerance policy for that shit.

  7. (But I’ve seen the uglier stuff online, and it’s ramping back up again for the election. It can be depressing being a lefty who likes guns… The online forums that discourage that crap are few and far between.)

I’m with you. I never bought into a lot of the sillier left-wing stuff; I mean, if Jake had wanted a toy gun as a kid, he’d have had it. And I’m still fond of the idea of playing with plastic army men. Haven’t done it since I was a kid, but we used to have a great time making explosion noises and tossing plastic men into the air. I’m sure my dad would be appalled.
