Back to school

And it starts all over again:

The repeated cattle-prod jolts to get him out of bed in the morning (you have to be cruel to be kind).

The endless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Lunch consists of a piece of fruit, PB&J, yogurt, a protein bar. Sometimes for the sake of variety I’ll substitute cheese and crackers for the sandwich. Jake tells me that his sack lunches are the healthiest ones he sees.

The last minute homework. Props to Jake tonight, though: it’s only 9:30 PM and he’s almost done with his Theology assignment. He had to buy a Bible this year, and his teacher wants the kids to decorate their Bible so that they’ll develop an emotional attachment to it. Jake’s decorating his with pictures of Jupiter’s moons, a portrait of Galileo, and some of Da Vinci’s drawings.

The near-heat stroke every time the PE teacher makes the kids run a mile in supra-100 degree weather.

Last year, there was the hair-pulling (if I had hair) over his insipid honors English class. This year’s curriculum looks a little better, but once again, I did a fine job second-guessing: he’s already done The Odyssey and Macbeth.

But oy, these art project assignments. What special hells do his teachers have in store for us this year?

D.

    *snort* Good boy!

Back to school is still 2 weeks off, but we will have some interesting challenges here.

It’s such a hassle, I wonder if I will miss it when it is gone. I suspect so.

Is his PE teacher overweight? It always used to kill me when I’d get a hefty PE teacher who sat back and watched all the students suffer as they ran while he/she sat back and watched.

School food? Always nasty. I’m sure what you’re packing Jake IS much better.

As for decorating the Bible, that seems kind of a unique approach; I’d be interested to hear how the teacher follows up on the emotional attachment aspect.

A couple weeks to go for me too…even teachers need time to get their head back into the game.

Carrie: yup, we thought so 🙂

    Dean: good luck.

Sis: nope, he’s fit according to Jake.

Jake saw a few other “custom decorated” bibles today — one person simply wrapped his in black paper. Hmm.

School here doesn’t start until the 30th. My boys are still in the smoky East. I’m enjoying staying up late, getting up at 9, and rolling into work at 10 (this shifted schedule has me leaving at 10, as well).

In my AP English class we were discussing something (sad that I don’t remember what) and someone asked about Mary Magdalen and why the book was referring to her. So at least Jake will be getting all the references that pop up in various works of literature!

Never read the Odyssey. Nor Moby Dick. Am planning to get a Kindle and download free classics, so I can round out my reading.
