A lot of times those bastards will be going after old posts. There’s a thing called Comment Timeout (it’s the usual easy WP thing, upload, enable, configure) that automatically closes comments on posts over an age you set.
Yah, so I just went to look at mine. I had 5100 in my spam queue this morning (0 now, deleted them) and there were no performance issues.
Modern relational databases handle 5000 rows as easily as they handle 100 rows. Your 2500 spam comments weren’t slowing down blewhost’s servers at all (unless they’re horribly misconfigured by some chance – unlikely).
What probably happened was some 0 level tech weenie checked stats and saw a spike. He freaked, and blewhost’s customer-centric policy allowed him to lock your domain without notifying you first.
If I’m ever in the market for another hosting service, I know who I won’t choose.
Actually, I just upgraded to 2.7 last night, and I noticed that WP now has an option to close comments after X days. It’s somewhere in the Discussion configurations. So no need to mess with Comment Timeout at all, it’s now built in to WP.
Done. I set it for 14 days, but I could probably halve that.
My problem (still) is that I can’t figure out what happened to my links on the left sidebar. I have a bad feeling that something doesn’t work between Tiga (my theme) and WP 2.7. Time to google . . .

That might help.

Thanks, Dean. I’ll futz with comment timeout at lunchtime, maybe. Some time when I’m not dog tired.
Anyone have a suggestion for a hosting service? (Yes, Pat, I’m keeping Dreamhost in mind.)

“Yummy pie”? Where’d you get that graph?
