Oy, the Writer’s Strike. Will those evil corporate minions ever learn that they are no match for organized creative talent?
For those of you who are suffering JSSCWS (Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert Withdrawal Syndrome, which is only a little less damaging than Priapic Sleep Arousal Syndrome), The Daily Show’s writers have put together an entertaining YouTube video, showcased over at DailyKos. Enjoy.
D.
Those “evil corporate minions” pretty much won the last writer’s strike. Got the writers to agree to take a very small percentage of video sales in exchange for waiting for the market to mature before increasing that percentage. Well, that market matured and they never revisited those percentages.
STUDIOS: 1
WRITERS: 0
While I think the writers are correct in wanting a share of Internet profits, and they have good reasons not to trust the studios who want them to wait until the market has “matured” given the track record with the video market, I think it’s likely the writers will lose out. Another union is already blasting the WGA, and the studios can likely hold out for far longer than the writers. The studios have the option of more unscripted realty shows, as well as the possibility of licensing programming from Canada or even the UK. The studios have a lot more “weapons” in their arsenals, so I have doubts that the strike will end well for the writers.
I tend to sympathize with the writers. However, I am indeed in Daily Show and Colbert withdrawal, so I sure hope it gets settled soon! How can I follow the Presidential campaign without them? Thanks for posting the clip, it gave me insight into the situation as well as a smile!
