Reminds me of a short story called “King of the Hill” by Chad Oliver, about a man who, knowing the ecological end of Earth was drawing nigh, sent a clutch of automated rockets to terraform and seed Titan with Earth life. Frozen, fertilized ova were raised to term and decanted by robots. There were no humans among the Titanites; he’d sent a bunch of different kinds of animals, though.
The end of the story has a group of raccoons around a fire, roasting meat. A dog waits patiently at the edge of the circle of light and heat, tail thumping, and finally one of the raccoons tosses him a scrap.
At the risk of repetition…awwwwwwwww!!!
My in-laws had one that got under the car’s hood and ate at the wires. They also had possums living on their roof; those suckers eat anything…I was a witness. They are very shy creatures.
Awww, cute! Have you named them yet?
My son wants to name them, of course. They are cute, and bold as brass. The little beggars!
Ohhh, they’re lovely!
they are soooo cute!
I told you they would come back with a bunch of uncles, kids and grandmas. 🙂
Now I suspect there will be 6 foot intelliget raccoons in Doug’s next story.

Thanks everyone. Pat — sounds like a cool story.
Yeah, methinks they’re big vermin, but cute vermin nonetheless.
Adorable widdle bandit-faces! Awwww!
