Mashup extravaganza

I never thought I would owe a debt of gratitude to USA Today, but here goes: thanks, USA Today! In the 1/23/7 issue, Janet Kornblum reported on the mashup phenomenon. Remember Brokeback Spongebob? Brokeback to the Future? The Shining reinterpreted as the feel-good movie of the century? All mashups.

Naturally, I’ve been spending the last half hour watching mashups, first at YouTube, then at The Trailer Mash, a blog devoted to mashups. Favorites thus far:

Saturday Night Live’s Apocalypto. See the Apocalypto Gibson really wanted to make.

Titanic: Two the Surface. Jack’s back! Frozen in a block of ice, he’s revived in the 21st Century to begin life anew.

Neo vs. Robocop. Which would have been MUCH better if Robocop had iced Neo, but hey, you takes what you gets. With a special guest appearance from Yoda.

and my personal favorite,

Hamlet is Back. Schwarzenegger as Hamlet. Brilliant concept, masterful execution.

Now you night owls have something to keep you entertained.

Apocalypto – I didn’t laugh until the last line, then I almost ruined my keyboard.
It’s really mean to post procrastination temptations on your blog.
Oh, and the Duggers just plain scare me. Sort of like the army of ants coming to take over the world.
    I smell babywipes…

The Neo vs. Robocop one was really disappointing. They really wimped out at the end.

Damn you — I have a life. Or something close to it. But I love the Titanic one just for the sheer originality and the countless hours of searching for clips of Leo in various films. 10 Things I Hate About Commandments is great just for the songs + imagery. 🙂

Funny how different things do it for different people. On Neo vs. Robocop, my only disappointment was not seeing Neo get offed. I rather like Robo. And that 10 Commandments one, feh.

There’s a Monty Python & the Holy Grail one at that site, if you look for it. It’s meant to be serious, but it still plays funny.

My kids tell me that a mash up has to be from a bunch of different movies.

That Titanic: Two The Surface is hilarious. It is better than the first one, shorter and makes more sense. LMAO

Kate, tell your kids “WHATEVER” for me, hmm? In a really obnoxious tone of voice.

CD: yup, I wasn’t a big fan of the original, Leo DaCrapio not being one of my faves. I’ll never understand why Karen kept watching it over and over again.

I loved how they were searching the sea bottom for the diamond!

I think you mean whutEVVER. Got to get the emphasis in the right spot.

I never did see that movie and have never had the desire to.

Hee! I actually don’t think the SNL clip qualifies as a mashup, but the last line is a killer.

The Titanic sequel was pretty awesome – just a little too long.
