Am I going to have to host another contest

to get y’all to listen to Cortney Tidwell?

Here, she sounds a bit like a mad hybrid of Bjork and Shirley Manson, but the music is Pink Floyd circa Ummagumma. And honestly, when was the last time someone produced new psychedelic music?

And here she is with a very different sound in “Watusii,” on her album Boys.

My main regret is that she only has one EP and two CDs. Three if you count her most recent CD, “Invariable Heartache,” which as best I can tell is more country-western.

Do I like her well enough to listen to C-W? I never would have thought it possible, but my resolve is weakening.

I didn’t care for the first one, myself. I’ll give it another try later, maybe it will grow on me.

Invariable Heartache is by Kort, which I think is a mashup (there’s an official smartass word for that, but I can’t pull it up now – like ‘amalgam’ but snootier) of Cortney and Kurt. I wouldn’t call the two songs I listened to C+W – maybe you got that impression because the Kurt half of Kort has a Texas twang in his voice. Anyway, I’d say it was jazz-infused folk with indie-arts overtones and a touch of western angst. The Cort half of Kort seems to be relegated to aethereal backing vocals.

On first listen, I’m not sure whether I liked it or not.

I will have to listen to all of this again.

It’s all subjective, of course. As much as it might seem like it sometimes, I’m not trying to force my preferences on my friends 😉

The word you’re looking for — portmanteau, I think? Or is that something different? Too busy right now to look it up . . .
