Hacked!

I maligned BlueHost too soon. Turns out someone hacked into some of my WordPress files and left all kinds of syntactically heinous code.

B&W is back now, as you can see. From past experience, I know that I can only rest easy after a few problem-free days have passed. The tech who figured it out has changed things (“permissions”?) to make my dearest Balls impregnable. (Huh. Wait. Impregnable balls — something is wrong with that.)

Why would anyone hack a blog, especially a relatively low traffic blog like B&W? I don’t get it.

Things are a little mellower today. I’m no longer on call, which means they can’t hurt me too badly.

stupid hackers. the answer? because they CAN. like when i asked my bf, why on earth would someone spend however much time it would take to write viruses that would hurt Macs? BECAUSE THEY CAN. stupid people. grar.
i’m glad it’s back now, though.

  2. Cracking blogs and other content management systems has a profit motive: It’s usually about Teh Spam (most often bull$hit search keywords crammed into invisible HTML elements coupled with scripted downloads of malicious code to capture PCs for spamming), and/or click fraud (typically script-based redirects that count as ‘clicks’ on revenue-raising ads without you being aware of it).

    Glad you’re back online, Doug.

Damn, I wish I’d thought of hacking yr site. I could have replaced all yr quality content with paeans to Mariah Carey and Madonna.

    They were evidently incompetent hackers.

Somehow, Karen found out the IP address of the person who hacked the site. He/It is based
out of San Jose. I wonder if there’s any way to report such things? Did this even break a
    law?

Karen spent the better part of yesterday checking all our pewters for viruses. A couple of
’em were badly infected. I haven’t been clicking on porn sites, I haven’t!

Not from THOSE computers, anyway . . .

I hope nobody recognizes me here, but when I was helping my computer-illiterate husband to post his photos to his Picasa website I found an album of soft porn pictures that somehow ended up there unbeknownst to him. We both got a great laugh. Check this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8rKFtmlVvY
